Hives – Here Are Some Tips on How to Treat This Annoying Problem

Hives can be a real pain, anybody who suffers from this type of rash will attest to that. The redness, itchiness, and swelling that comes with having hives is definitely no picnic! If you want to get rid of this annoying problem, the first step is to identify the source of what caused your hives. If you just have a mild case of hives, chances are that if you just wait a few hours it will go away by itself. For more severe cases that last longer than a few hours, you will want to find an over the counter treatment. If the hives last for more than a few days, you will definitely want to contact your doctor for professional help.

If you do end up needing to see a doctor, he or she will usually prescribe antihistamines. Some of the more popular brands of antihistamines include Benadryl, Tagamet, and Seldane. Any of these can bring much needed relief from all the annoying and uncomfortable symptoms that come with having hives. If your hives are severe enough, your doctor may even require you to take a corticosteroid injection. There are also epinephrine injections, but those are only used if the hives are so severe that your life is at risk. Remember, this is extremely rare, so don’t panic if you notice hives, but do remember to contact your doctor if you’re having any type of severe discomfort or the hives last for more than a couple days.

For milder cases of hives, there are some home remedies that you can easily apply yourself. Soaking in a nice oatmeal bath is a great way to not only ease your symptoms, and also lets you get some time to yourself to relax. Not much oatmeal is needed, only about five tablespoons; also add three tablespoons of cornstarch to the bath. This is a good remedy if the hives cover a large portion of your body. The results won’t be instant though, you may need to wait a day or more to see the hives start to clear up. And once again, always contact your doctor if you don’t see your hives start to clear up after a couple days.
